How to Groom/Stable Hand Chores/Farm / Barn Maintenance

Daily Items:

1. clean and rake all paddock areas (dirt area) and dispose of manure. Check fences and area for dangerous objects or disrepair.

2. Pasture and grass area clean once a week (large pastures), smal pasture or turn out every day. Know what your poisonous weeds look like and get rid of them.

3. All water buckets scrubbed with toilet brush and refilled once a day (if horses are stalled at night). If for any reason they are stalled during the day they should be cleaned and filled 3 times a day and stalls cleaned 3 times a day.

Also check for anything that is sharp or broken and fix it. Electronic waterers cleaned and scrubbed once a day.

Large water tanks cleaned and scrubbed free of algae at least once a week.

4. Stalls, (Shavings sifted and cleaned also and pdz), tack roomand feed room swept once a day. All food bins should be clean, closed up and moisture free.

5. Feed horses on a regular schedule. If not set to graze everyday, then fed 5 times a day with hay....grain as needed not as a matter of course. I use a marker board to check off every feeding. Feed changes with how they look, not any book.

6. Tack cleaned after each use...a quick wipe down is sufficient. Polish tack including boots as necessary according to use and climate. I do my saddles once a week.

7. Every horse whether ridden or not should be given a once over once a day to check for injuries etc...that means checking feet too. If they need fly spray or whatever...do it.

8. All blankets, sheets, pads if used on a regular basis washed once a week. Dressage/jump or cotton pads cleaned after every use.

9. Groom your horse before and hose down after every ride. Check feet.
